Horsies!

I found another good example of how using things meant for 18 inch dolls sometimes works better than using the things meant for my dolls' actual size (12 inch/Barbie/1:6).  I've mentioned this before, most recently in my review of the Hogwarts Express playset.

Image from Internet.

According to this and my clumsy math, a regular Barbie-scale horse is technically a pony.
The average (using measurements on Angus and Khan) height of a Barbie horse, to scale, is only 12 hands.  I don't take issue with my dolls having ponies instead of horses.  It's just an interesting point.

Both Angus (hairy feet) and Khan (funny tail) are based on real horse breeds.  Angus should be 17 to 19 hands.  Gage should have of trouble looking over his spine! Khan is smaller, about 14 hands, but his spine still should be chest high on Gage.  Remember, I'm using my own math skills here, so estimates and bad calculation are both possible.

Bullet: thanks for giving up your spot for me.
Khan: Jeanie made me.

Like Khan before him, Bullet jumped into my hands at a local flea market.  He fit all my criteria for a doll horse: reasonably realistic eyes and a dynamic pose. He is a horse, not a pony, on my scale.  Roughly fifteen hands.

Bullet was heftier even before I noticed his long legs.  Turns out, he is a Our Generation horse.  Our Generation are 18 inch dolls similar to American Girl dolls. Thus this blog post.

Some of you may remember I had a few more horses.  All but Angus went in the post-soap-opera purge, for various reasons.  One of them wasn't walking or anything, just standing there, and originally had human looking eyes that I tried to fix.  Most of them were too small to be anything but babies.

When I found Khan a few weeks  ago, he had some kind of wiggly stirrup thing that was meant for the doll to (I assume) stand while riding.  It stuck out of his belly and was purple to match his saddle and bridle.  I sawed most of it off and used black nail polish to hide the rest.

Bullet needed a scrubbing and a brushing.  My friend suggested naming him Silver Bullet.  Once cleaned up, he isn't as silver as we thought, so he's just Bullet.

Angus fits nicely in the horse trailer.

Khan also fits nicely in the horse trailer.  He is skinny enough to share the space, but neither of his buddies are!

Bullet looks like he can step over with just a little effort.  While we're at it, let's try on the tack!

Khan's saddle and bridle almost fit Bullet.

Pink set does not even come close.

Pink saddle number two almost fits.

Angus's saddle has been repaired with elastic so I didn't even try to wiggle it over Bullet's big ole hips.  Ignore the water.  He forgot to stand on his head for proper drainage after his bath.

Not sure where this came from, but it will fit with a bit of effort.  Most of my barn stuff came from thrift store assortment bags and I think this was in one of them.

Too small.

Khan can wear it.  Almost.

Angus is not amused.

Angus can share this one with Bullet.  Khan prefers his purple halter with the gold reins.

My other barn stuff, usually stored in either the horse trailer or the sleigh.  The lanterns and signs were Christmas tree ornaments.  The buckets were probably in the previously mentioned assortment bags.  I did get a rooster once but he had a speaker and the speaker holes looked like violence had occurred.

Everything together to be put away.  Eventually.  My excuse this time?  Gotta let Bullet stand on his head for a while and drain that bathwater.  That fashionista bag used to hold the tack... but now I have too much tack...

Downsizing Is Hard (Part Two)

First on the agenda:  All these kids sitting on the classroom floor bothers me.  The desks I have don't match since two of them are Monster High, so I'm not worried about that.  To buy enough for everyone, even at knock-off prices, will cost me at least 30 dollars and include things I don't want.  I decided to try making my own.

I knew the instructions on myfroggystuff would result in a desk that could not survive The Boy, and possibly not even my own use, so figured out a pattern to cut out of cardboard.

It held Tommy long enough to take this picture and make my hands cramp.   Another tactic was needed.

The desks already don't match, so who says everyone has to be at a desk?

Space is limited.  I managed to seat four at the tan table and the remainder on the long bench.  When playing, I'll remove the bench and spread the desks out a bit.  Not everyone has to be in attendance for every class.  At least nobody is sitting on the floor.

Next on the agenda is vehicles. My dolls have a few.

I kept the two largest horses.

Most of my doll play is family oriented, which required passenger seating.  My rule is that the car has to seat more than two adults.  Exceptions are made for the ATVs and Volkswagens.  And gifts.

Y'all know The Tank is staying.  It is the only one that's really a storage issue, since I use the first floor of the dollhouse and the space under the coffee table as parking.

Only two went.  The blue ATV and convertible Beetle were broken beyond my abilities or inclination.  I did group them by type when putting them back - here are the SUVs and the camper

The Vespa got stored with the horse-related vehicles.

The ATVs between dollhouses.  Parking under the coffee table for the rest.

Third item on the agenda: Oven door.  I just cut thin cardboard to fit and covered it with contact paper.  Toothpick across the bottom to hold it in place.  I'll be keeping a lookout for something better.

Doll shelves are done. On top and bottom, set pieces.  DIY supplies in the attic, kitchen/pantry, playground and classroom.  The big clear bin is wardrobe. Part Three will show the finished (for now, anyway) area.  They still use more of my bedroom than I do!

Getting Answers

 Barbieville Police Station

Lynch: You found the body, ran into Shore Thing, and had them call 911. I need a little bit more than that to go on.  Why were you there? What did you see specifically?

Hank: That's all you're getting until my man from Witness Protection shows up.

Lynch: Hank, you stumbled upon a crime scene. Giving me a statement about that is not going to have any impact on your status with the feds. You don't need to bother them with this.

Hank: I don't care if I'm bothering them. (Stands up) Unless you call them in, or arrest me, I'm going back to my office.  I'm a busy man, Chief Lynch.

Lynch: Fine, I'll call them. We'll make an appointment to get your statement.

Hank completely misses her sarcasm and leaves. Lynch goes back to her paperwork, what little she has at this point, and is startled by the abrupt appearance of Midge Sherwood, county coroner.

Midge: I've brought over copies of all my documents. The autopsy supports the obvious cause of death, unless something really weird shows up in the lab report.

Lynch: Is it casual day at the morgue?

Midge (laughs): No, I shower there and put on my civvies before heading home.

Lynch: Not a bad idea. Sometimes I feel like I never take this uniform off.

Midge: We might have a problem with Mr. Higgins. He tried to stop the CSI team from taking photos.

Lynch: You have no idea. I'll handle him. How's Kamala settling in?

Midge: She hasn't left my house. But it's not like I've had time to show her around town.

Windu Acres

Tanner: More dogs?

Mace: I wondered when you were going to ask about that.  They came with the horse, and I know a few people who might adopt them.  Your girlfriend for one. She was disappointed when your folks decided to keep Cujo and Yeti.

Tanner: Yeah, but then Santa brought Anakin a cat.

Mace: I know some other people, too.  Nakoma just gets first dibs.

Tanner: I bet Four and Tris will take one, now that they're in their own place. She really misses her parents' dogs.

Mace: Now you're thinking. (changes the subject) We buy the young rejects and breed them. There's less money in it, short term, but that's how we get the strong work horses Windu Acres is famous for.  People will reject a foal for all kinds of reasons.

Tanner: Yeah, this one's got socks on the left legs but not on the right legs.  Big deal.

Mace: Don't be a snob. Some jobs require a certain look for the horse.  (Mace eyes Tanner for a moment.) You know, I'm really glad you decided to work with me. I retired because neither of Rosie's girls cared to follow in my footsteps.  Then y'all came along, and those foals turned up in the Nature Preserve, and I figured someone up there was telling me something.

Tanner: Did they ever catch the jerk who dumped those three? (Mace shakes his head.) Hagrid needs more trail cams.

William: Good Afternoon, ladies. Is there a problem?

Bertie: Yes. A major one. Have you seen the garbage they expect us to say on the air?

William: I can't say I have.  I trust my people to do their jobs largely unsupervised.

Becky: Good journalism should not be biased, Mr. Darling. I learned that on the high school newspaper.

Bertie: One of the reasons I took the pay cut to take this job was so I didn't have to cater to partisan interests. You promised our coverage would be balanced.

William: Ladies, you are my anchors. You're the boss down there.

Becky: So you've got our back when we tell them off?

William (chuckles): Yes, Miss Weasley, I've got your back.

Almost Back To Normal

Taylor and Gabriella take Jenny and Fred to the beach.  It's not very hot out, so there aren't any crowds to worry about.

Fred: Look, it's Four and his mommy and brothers and Tris!  Kin we go say hi?

Taylor: Go on.  Remember the Germ Rules.

Four: Are the twins with you?

Taylor: No, they're at work.  Painting social distancing reminders on the pavement.  Things like horseshoes in the merry-go-round line. Albus said if they gotta do it, they're gonna have fun with it.

Esmeralda: I was just sending the boys up to the vending machines.  Would you like something?

Jenny: Do they gots candy bars?

Esmeralda: I already have some of those in my cooler bag.  We're out of drinks, though.

Taylor: Who was that with Kevin?

Four: Ricky.  Or, as he prefers nowadays, Cedric. Mom told him he has to act the part if he wants to use an adult name.  Whenever he gets whiny, we just revert to calling him Ricky.

Esmeralda: It's done wonders for his attitude.

Gabriella: But his name's Richard, isn't it?

Esmeralda:  He didn't want to end up being Dick Eaton, for obvious reasons. Cedric is his middle name.

Taylor: I didn't even recognize him.

Four: My dad and your mom have had both families on lockdown.  You haven't seen him in months.  And, you know, puberty.

Tris: By the way, we talked to Rose-Grace about our wedding.  She said all the law requires is a public declaration of intent and signing the paperwork.  Saves us a lot of drama!

Four: We're going so untraditional, it ain't even funny.

Gabriella: Hey, it's your wedding.

Hagrid, the caretaker of Doll County Wilderness Preserve, meets with Animal Control and the vet.

James: How long have they been out here?

Hagrid: Can't be more than 24 hours.  They weren't here yesterday.

Charlie: This is a new one on me.  Dogs, cats... but horses?  Why would anyone dump horses out here?

Hagrid: Same reason they do any other critter.  They're disgusting, selfish idiots.

Charlie: Well, I can't take them to the animal shelter.  (to James)  And yours is a mobile clinic.  But I really don't think it's safe for them to stay here.

James: This is even weirder than you think.  They're perfectly healthy, from what I can tell, and look to be purebreds.  Very valuable animals.

Hagrid (taking out his phone): I might have a foster home for them.  Let me make a call.

Charlie and James exchange a glance, both willing to bet they know who he's calling.

Mace: I see you managed to contain them.

Hagrid: The filly came along nicely, but those two colts... you gotta watch them.  That spotted one just likes to tease, running away and coming back like a boomerang.

Mace: Angus will be glad for the company.  He misses Silverstream.

Hagrid: Dr. Potter said he'll be by your place tomorrow to give them a real exam.  You sure you're okay with baby-sitting them?

Mace: I'm okay with adopting them if it comes to that.  I've  finally got grandkids that are interested in following in my footsteps!

Albus meets with the mayor about Witch's Cove reopening.

Rose-Grace: All these measures look good, but why is she putting off opening until next year?

Albus: To quote her, the place is gonna be a hotbed of germs no matter how many changes we make.  This gives the experts time to cope and it won't break her bank.  Dent it real good, but not break it.  I doubt even Kida realized how well-off she left her girls.

Rose-Grace: She told me once that she was probably a millionaire.

Albus: I wouldn't be surprised.  She made money hand over fist and lived simple.

Rose-Grace: What about the ghost hunt?  Is that still on?

Albus: Oh, yeah.  They're gonna release a joint DVD.  Good press and a bit of profit for both the park and the paranormal team.

Doll Space Envy

A chat with some of my fellow doll people led me to consider the space I've dedicated to Barbieville.  Some of them have entire rooms!  And even outdoor spaces!

This is Barbieville.  Not quite half of my living room.  Rusty (My Size Barbie) is the only doll that doesn't spend the majority of her time here.  Join me for a tour, won't you?  The large teal bin is Wardrobe and the pink thing under it is full of Lego blocks.

We start at the Pike's deck/carport.  A clip lamp on the neighboring bookshelf is used for lighting over here, if needed. (The table once held my grandmother's little television.)

This shot of the Pike's house shows one of my lighting challenges. (It's a My Dolly And Me house, by Wicked Cool Toys.)

Most of the day, I get natural lighting from the windows, which can create some lighting challenges.  I do sometimes use other locations in my apartment.  For hospital rooms, I use the kitchen counters. Anyplace that needs to look industrial, I set up in the furnace room.

This old computer desk in the left-side corner is my primary shooting location.  The Guinness family portrait, for updating the census page, was the last thing I photographed and they're still there.  In all honesty, they'll be there until the next session.

Underneath is the rest of the Pike family vehicles, Pocahontas's Jeep, a play set piece, and an old grocery store display.  The display is crammed full of tables, school desks, and things to sit on.  Top shelf holds the pictures I sometimes use for backdrops.  Folding backdrops and play sets go between the desk and bookshelf next to it.

The bookshelf in the corner holds plastic bins full of accessories and one end of Albus's home.  This is also where most of the citizens of Barbieville hang out when not being played with.  (Those with established home sets, the Pikes and Albus, hang out in them.) There's also a "treasure chest" full of weapons.  My dolls are ready for the Zombie Apocalypse.

That electric cord is to the wandering lamp.  So called because it wanders the area, providing light where needed. The iPod is hooked up to a portable radio, but those cords are tucked safely away.  You can see the lamp and radio in the first picture if you're really curious about them.

They generally hang out in family groups.  The Singles and Unassigned mix and mingle.

The horses, horse trailer, sleigh, and golf cart share space with the day care's swing set and a tin full of headgear, including a space helmet.  The sleigh is full of decorative items.

My non-player dolls stand on the game shelf with my vintage VWs.  There are two 19 inch Pocahontas dolls, a Lagoona Blue, and a Cleo DeNile.  I'm not usually a fan of Monster High, but they were a gift - and ironically, I'd recently lost a feline companion of almost 20 years named Cleo!

I have extra doll seating on the wall and right-side windowsill.

That's my Behind The Scenes Barbieville.  None of my minions have complained about its utility as a play area.  I'm pretty happy with it, but just like Ariel....  (sing it with me) I want more!  So jealous of those with, like, whole rooms and yards to play in!
