Catching Up and Getting Acquainted

Windu Acres: Candy has provided lunch for Mace and Tanner.

Candy: I'm surprised you're not taking courses in animal husbandry or something, given society's rejection of apprenticeships.  Unless you call it internship.

Tanner:  Grandpa Mace found me some on-line courses.  I usually do that in the evenings while everyone else is fighting over the television.

Candy: I see.  And Finnick is in trade school learning to fix roller coasters.

Tanner: Well, it's not that simple, but yeah.  Albus says he's looking forward to retirement, finally, but the guy's full of it.  Witch's Cove could've hired someone a long time ago if he really wanted to retire.

Mace: Albus will retire when he's dead.  He's as much a part of the family as the park is.  Or maybe it's the other way around.  Ask Tanner about the wedding.

Tanner: Grandpa!

Candy: Whose wedding?  Peeta and Ken's is the only one I know of.

Tanner:  Grandpa thinks it's funny that Whitney is...  well, she keeps fussing at Nakoma and Finnick that there is no reason to delay their wedding.  But me and Finnick want to have a double wedding.  There's no way me and Whitney are ready - I'm not gonna be the guy that moves his wife into his parents' house.

Candy: Maybe she's turning into a Bridezilla and doesn't want to share the glory.  Or maybe Ken and Peeta gave her wedding fever and it'll pass.

Tanner: It better pass.

******
Speaking of Nakoma, she's providing Maisie with a casual tour of the college campus.

Nakoma:  Most of your classes will be in this building, and I've never even set foot in here!

Maisie:  Thanks so much for this.  They gave me a map and everything, but it always helps to have a flesh-and-blood person to ask. Where's the best place to study?  Besides the library.  (Her phone chimes)  Oh, that's my husband.  Let me take this real quick.

Husband: Who is Helena House and why are you using her phone?

Maisie: It's the group home's name.  Helena was the mother of the benefactors, and this is my new phone.  I get a company one as one of the founders.

Husband: She found you again, didn't she? Where'd she get arrested this time?

Maisie: I don't know and I don't care.  Look, I'm kind of in the middle of something.  I'll call you tonight?

Nakoma: Finnick told me what little he knows about your history when he asked me to show you around campus.  I'm sorry your birth family sucks.

Maisie: Thanks.  I lucked out when I met Dionne, though.  The Baptistes welcome me to everything - and now the Pikes do! (gestures with the phone)  The military ever stops deploying my husband, I hope to start a semi-functional family of my own.

Making Plans

 Sunburst, early evening

Whitney:  What are you guys up to tonight?  And who is this little lady?

Peeta: We filed for an adoption, figuring we wouldn't get a kid until after the wedding.  Well, here she is!  (To Oksana)  This is our friend Whitney.  She's Tanner's girlfriend and has a little girl about your age.

Finnick: Man, you called us down here to talk about the wedding?  Again?

Whitney: Hey, a wedding takes a lot of planning.  You have no idea how many times we met while planning Tris's.  Probably because all Four did was show up that day.  He let her do all the work.

Tanner:  Well, traditionally, that's how it works.  Not my fault this particular wedding has two guys!

Whitney: Well, I certainly hope you don't think you're off the hook if we get married.  Same goes for you, Finnick.

Oksana:  You're silly.  You can't marry both of them!

Finnick:  My girlfriend is one of her best friends, Oksana.  (To Whitney)  Has Nakoma said something?  Because we agreed --

Peeta: --to wait a couple years.  For no good reason, I might add.  Nakoma is one of the wealthiest women in town and you've got a steady job.  Me and Ken are living in his mother's house!

Finnick: Mind your own business, freeloaders.

Ken:  Okay, we will.  I think we can make her a flower girl.  We're both coming down an aisle - side aisles instead of the center one - and this way Tommy walk with one of us as ring bearer and Oksana with the other.  You dudes of honor wait up by the altar as planned.

Tanner: Seriously, guys, just go to Step-mom's office and have her do it there.

Whitney:  Geez, maybe I should do all the planning if I marry you.  You're about as romantic as a kick in the shins.

******

At another table, Dionne and Maisie go over their plans.

Dionne:  We can have girls in the north wing and boys in the south.  Center area is common ground.

Maisie (silencing her phone): That arrangement isn't going to do much to stop gay residents from doing it.  Where do we put any non-binary or trans residents?

Dionne: Gays don't generally get accidentally pregnant.  That's the main thing I want to prevent.

Maisie: Dionne, I know it's a mansion, but is it really big enough to house all the foster kids in this county?  Even if you make those huge third floor spaces into wards for the preadolescents, I don't see how you can pull this off.

Dionne:  It won't be easy.  But -- wait a minute, why aren't you taking that call?

Maisie:  It's her again.  You know if I answer, she's going to guilt me into it.

Dionne:  Give me the phone.  I'll deal with her.

Taylor Tells The Family

After receiving an alarming call, Rose-Grace combines errands with tracking down her husband.

Rose-Grace:  There you are!  Daisy told me you were in HBAD!

Pike:  I was, last she knew.  What's going on?

Fred: Step Mommy's real upset.  Tell her it's okay, Daddy.

Rose-Grace: I just got a call from the Medical Social Worker.  It seems Stacie's convinced herself Taylor is dying.  I know we told Taylor it could wait until she was ready to tell the family, but...

Pike:  Stacie never really got over your mom's death.  (Significant glance toward Fred)  And this might be too complex for some members of the family.

Fred: I told Stacie it was big people stuff.  She don't never listen to me.

*****
That evening....

Taylor:  What the hell?!  Does she think we're a bunch of liars?!

Pike: We kind of set a precedent for what she thinks is going on, given how we failed to properly explain Grammy's illness.

Taylor: Well, I'm not happy, but I guess we don't have a lot of choice at this point.  Can't have Stacie accidentally starting rumors.

Rose-Grace:  I'll spread the word.  Family meeting tonight, after the little ones go to bed.  Might as well tell everyone at once.  And I'm sorry we have to rush this on you.

Taylor: Apology accepted.  I almost have my head wrapped around it, anyway, so...

Taylor: I... When my appendix burst, the surgeons found out that I don't have internal female guts.  Where my ovaries should be, I have testicles. It's called Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome.  (Looks directly at Stacie)  I can't have babies, that's all it really means.  I am not dying.

Lee:  Wait, what?

McG:  I'll explain when we get home, dear.  No need to prolong Taylor's discomfort.

Finnick: Isn't that really rare?

Taylor: Yes, it is.  And I'd appreciate it if y'all are careful who you talk to about this.  I'm not ashamed or anything, but it's a private matter.  I really don't want it getting all over town.

Morgan: People can be very cruel, even if they mean well.   I don't blame you for wanting to keep this quiet... especially in high school!

Mace: That doesn't make any sense... I changed your diapers, you're a girl.

Tanner: The only boy parts she has are inside, Grandpa.  It's not like the other kinds of Intersex, where the problem's obvious.

Nikki: Is that in my sex ed book?  Or do we not cover that til a higher grade?

Stacie:  You're not dying?!  Really and truly?! (Runs across the room and hugs Taylor.)

Lies and Gossip

Zenobia and Boudicca have been summoned to Judge's Chambers.

Judge: It is unusual for me to speak directly with witnesses, but both attorneys have agreed provided they are present.  What I want isn't evidence, per se.  It's context to help me decide on sentencing. Both of you had obvious reactions to your father's testimony, which intrigues me.

Zenobia: If Mom knew about my van, she wouldn't have kept quiet.  She would have told me and encouraged me to prosecute the thief.  If there'd been drugs in it, she'd have seen to it I was prosecuted. She was very into teaching us that actions have consequences.

Boudicca: I'm beginning to think Dad needs psychiatric help.  That entire scenario sounds more like him protecting the family name than anything she would have done.

Zenobia:  You were always more forgiving than me.  The man is a liar, plain and simple.

Andre: Your Honor, I have to object.  Miss Malfoy is accusing my client of perjury.

Judge: Objection noted.  Is there anything else you'd like me to consider?

Boudicca:  He's always been more concerned with the family's public image than with our own feelings.  He wanted to legally disown Zenobia a long time ago, but Mom wouldn't hear of it.  Personally, I think he's the one who hid the vehicle away.  Whether he's lying or delusional I'll leave to the experts.

Zenobia: His first-born was supposed to be a lot of things I'm not. But none of that really bears on the case, except the van.  And the question of why it was in hiding doesn't change the fact that he used it to do what he did.

Judge: I'll take Boudicca's advice and consult with the professionals already on the case.  Thank you for your time. ladies.

****

As a result of this meeting, the keytar player for Sarcastic Fringehead is late for rehearsal.

Zenobia: Thanks for waiting, guys.  Talk to me about anything that's not my dad, please!

Whitney: Finnick was telling us he doesn't think Maddie Sulu needs guitar lessons and Nakoma wants to punch Esperanza in the nose.

Tanner: I wanna punch Esperanza in the nose.  Just because she gets you so worked up.

Whitney: I just worry that she might be right.  Even just a little.

Tanner: Well, she ain't right.  If I had a problem with our relationship, I'd talk to you about it.

Nakoma: It's not just you, anyway.  She's spreading tales about Finnick and Mattie, too.  Among others.

Zenobia: It's just gossip.  Do you have any ideas how many times the gossip mill's had me pregnant?

Nakoma: Mattie is a minor.  Finnick could get arrested.

Zenobia: Nobody's gonna get arrested based on gossip.  Investigated, maybe, but not arrested.

Mattie Settles In

 Sulu's (the local greenhouse/nursery)

Mattie is puttering around, enjoying her first full day of work in her new family's business. The bell on the door chimes.

Mattie: I'll be right with you!

Mattie: What can I do for you?

Jessie: I'm Jessie Cooper, I work for Joe Montez.  I need to put in an order for a large landscaping job.

Mattie: Oh, Su- I mean, Dad - hasn't trained me on that yet.  I'll have to call him in from the property.

Jessie: He's on the way in.  I flagged him down from the parking lot.  You must be Mattie.  How are you settling in?

Mattie: I like it here.  They even gave me my own room, even though I would've been fine sharing.  And the work so far has been a lot easier than what I did before.  Waitressing.

Jessie: I know what you mean.  Joe's a contractor, so we do construction.  I go home exhausted every night, but I don't normally deal with the public.  My roomie waits tables and she - well, my former roomie, I should say.  She recently had to move back into the family home.

Mattie:  As long as they keep their hands to themselves, I never minded the public.  It's the going home exhausted part that got to me!

Sulu: Thanks for waiting, Jessie.  I was checking on the hives.

Jessie: I figured as much since you looked like a snowman out there. Mattie's a nice girl.

Sulu: We've been quite pleasantly surprised.  Adopting an older child is always a risk.

Jessie: Did you really adopt her without ever meeting her?

Sulu: Sort of.  We'd seen her records and met her over video chat.  Now, what's up with this huge landscaping job?  Since when does Joe do landscaping?

****
Speaking of Jessie's former roomie, Zenobia is resting after rehearsal with Sarcastic Fringehead.

Zenobia: He thinks I'm not going to press charges.  Said my primary duty is to family.

Whitney: Well, my dad's an ass, but I don't think I'd --

Zenobia: Your dad never ran over your mom with your stolen vehicle. (pauses to collect herself)  I'm sorry, Whitney, I know your dad's done some awful things, but...  never mind, it's not a contest.  I'm just venting and probably telling you stuff I shouldn't.

Tanner: Since our mom is the star witness?

Finnick: Probably not supposed to tell anyone anything.

Taylor (entering): Hey, Finnick, you wanna make a little extra money?

Tanner: Hey!  Don't come in here during rehearsal!

Taylor: It's been five minutes since you stopped.  I waited and y'all are hibernating in here.  (To Finnick) That girl Sulu and Lynch adopted is looking for a guitar teacher.  She said she's just getting started, but Sulu said she's been taking lessons for years, so I don't know what's up with that.

Finnick: Let me guess.  You were showing her around school and just happened to mention that I play.

Taylor: Something like that.  She's pretty nice.  Kinda quiet.

Whitney: Is she pretty?

Finnick: What the hell? Why would that matter?

Zenobia: Because Esperanza, that's why.  Whit worries way too much about what that idiot thinks.

Whitney: Be nice.

Zenobia: Oh, that was way nicer than what I was thinking.

Finnick: I'll talk to Sulu or Lynch about it, Taylor.  We should be able to arrange something.

Success!

Morning, on Muneca Lake Beach.

Zenobia: Because the village of Barbieville stopped hosting Pride Events, it's been unfairly labeled.  Mayor Rose-Grace Pike has been accused of homophobia and transphobia, but nothing could be farther from the truth.  (laughs) The 1810 village charter contains the following:  "Private acts by adults, inflicting no harm upon others, shall not be governed by law.  If such is sin, each of us will answer a higher authority."  The simple fact of the matter is this: Behavior of celebrants at past events brought private acts into the streets.  Celebrants who chose to be more discrete were openly mocked.  (pause for effect) This event is being hosted by me, Zenobia Malfoy, as a private citizen.  It's not fancy because almost everyone participating has volunteered.  Love is love, the details don't matter, so let's not focus on them.

Crowd cheers.

Zenobia: We've got no parade, but a nice little festival.  Including live music by my band Sarcastic Fringehead, which starts as soon as I pass this microphone to the lovely Whitney Darling.

*****

Later, down by the floodwall.

Ken: Hey, your band is good!

Tanner: Yeah, we do all right as long as some jackass isn't yelling "Free Bird" from the crowd. (To Peeta) What the hell is that?

Peeta: We won these for Tommy at the arcade.  Cost us a good bit, but it was totally worth it. And by the way, that was his mom yelling Free Bird.  She laughed so hard when the entire band "freed their birds" at us I thought she was gonna hurt herself.

Tanner (shrugs): We're gonna do another set later, but Whitney had to go to work, so it'll be when she gets back.   You guys more comfortable here?  No one telling you to act more gay?

Ken: Our matching outfits and holding hands doesn't seem to be upsetting anyone on either side of the fence.  I really wish people'd stop thinking all gay men are flamers.

Tommy: Your dad looks more like people think a gay dude should than my brother does, and he's walking around with a pretty woman! Is that your mom?  Did she rainbow her hair just for today?

Casey: You know Dad.  He ain't gonna let being straight keep him from looking fabulous.  And no, Mom's hair is always like that.  (to Stacie) If Angus is here, who is pulling the carriage?

Stacie: Our new mare, Ka-Gae.  She's kinda scary looking, almost totally white and she's got the blackest eyes!  Really sweet, though.  Angus will get his turn later, when Ka-Gae is tired.

Tommy: Hey, Mommy, did you meet Casey's mom and dad?  They're so cool.

Doreen: Yes, I met Iris and Coby at teacher conferences.  Coby is one of Ken's college instructors, too.

Coby: You kids can ride the carriage together, if it's okay with Doreen. (laughs when Tommy and Casey get excited)  I thought you'd like that, but y'all better behave for Mr. Windu.

Speaking of the carriage rides, The Hernandez family is returning from a pleasant jaunt around town.

Esperanza: This is the worst Pride Festival ever.  I keep waiting for the hog-calling contest.

Daisy: It is a little dull, but I don't mind.  (To Bertie) How did we raise a city slicker? Small town life is so much nicer.

Bertie: Probably because we were living in a city for most of her life.  Of course, she is a grown woman and could go back if she chose, but I don't see her packing.

Tate: I'm thinking, now that I've got the house in some kind of order, of getting a job here.  Do the rest of it at my own pace, you know?  It's not like I've got anything to go back for.

Albus: Witch's Cove is always hiring, but it's mostly summer.  What kind of work are you looking for?

Tate: Well, I've worked lots of janitor type jobs.  Some construction.

Albus: Joe Montez is a contractor.  I don't know the number, but you can google him.

Leia: Who is that fine looking slice of man?

Boudica: Which one?

*****
The evening winds down.

Luna Jones relaxes at her face-painting station on the beach, listening to Sarcastic Fringehead perform requests.  One of twins is singing a duet with Whitney, some ancient love song.  Luna hopes Mom or Aunt Gwen picks her up soon - it's gotten chilly since the sun went down.

A Lucky Break?

Note: COVID masks are invisible to readers.  The hospital allows up to two people to be in the ER waiting room if they're with an ER patient.

After Pike and Rose-Grace leave in a hurry, Mace gathers the kids.

Fred: Sumpin bad happened!  Maybe somebody got dead!

Mace: It's Candy.  That mad bastard who's running over people hit her, but she is alive.

Stacie:  Mom?  Why would anyone want to runover Mom?

Tanner: Me and Finnick need to go.  Mom said, since we're adults now, she was going to change the paperwork so Dad's not POA any more.

Whitney: We can't invade the ER.  That'd be bad even if there wasn't a pandemic on.

Taylor: Yeah, if you go, everyone's gonna want to.  And don't start with how you'd stop us.  You know damn well you wouldn't argue if we managed to get into the car before you got it started.

Finnick: She might not have done it yet, though.  You know how she procrastinates stuff like that.

Nakoma: She's a tough woman.  I bet she's gonna be fine.

Finnick: I just need to sit tight.

*****

At the hospital.

Pike: They've got medical students working the front desk?

Boudicca: I help out everywhere, at least until my actual residency starts.  (Goes over the file, updating information as needed.)  This says her maiden name was Barr?  Candy Barr?

Rose-Grace:  That's one of the reasons she kept Pike's name after they divorced.  Her parents were easily amused.

Boudicca: All right, then.  It does say that the twins are listed as POA, but I don't think we need to contact them until Dr. Eaton makes a determination on her condition.  I'll be around if you need anything and someone will update you ASAP.

Pike:  She'll be fine, honey.  She's survived worse.

Rose-Grace: Are you trying to convince me or yourself?

Pike:  I'm not sure.  This guy going after Candy makes me wonder if she was working the case.  But don't the cops have their own photographers?

Rose-Grace: She could have been working on a story about the case.  Probably with someone from the Journal or WDLC.   I can make some calls if you want.

Pike: Maybe later.  Right now, I just need my wife.  Not the mayor.

*****
When Gabriella and Claudia hear the news, they rush to their best friends' sides.

Taylor: When they got the call, Mom and Grandpa were giving Dad a hard time for being racially insensitive.  He told me the exact same thing he told the twins - you know, those white boys!  I thought it was great that he treated me equal to them, but no.  They gotta ride him for his word choice.

Gabriella: Well, it's tricky.  Maybe his word choice could be better, but his heart's definitely in the right place.  He's been such a great dad for you and Nikki.

Taylor: Candy's been awesome, too.  Oh, Gabriella, I hope she's okay!

Claudia: Not knowing what's going on is the worst.

Nikki: Is it weird to be this worried about her?  I mean, she's just my... what... stepdad's ex?

Claudia: I think of her kind of as your aunt or something.  Would it be weird to worry about Morgan?

Whitney: I was so mad at you about Esper, and now this.  You could lose your mother.

Tanner: Hey, Mom getting hurt has nothing to do with that.  You have every right to be mad at me. Even if you're wrong.

Nakoma: Because Esperanza is a meddling drama queen.  Sorry, Whit, I'm with the guys on this one.

*****
Finally, after an eternity....

Marcus:  Candy's stabilized, but still unconsious.  I've called in a specialist for one of her legs - her knee took the brunt of the impact and is pretty much shattered.  Her vitals look good, all things considered.

Rose-Grace: That's all?  This guy killed the others.

Marcus (chuckles):  The others didn't see him coming and jump onto his hood.  By the way, I let the federal agent take Candy's go-pro.  Might be some useful footage on it.

Plots and Plans

The entire band has the day off, so a rehearsal is held.  Whitney is the last to arrive at Windu Acres, and when she enters the basement studio, silence falls over the rest.

Whitney: I know what that means.  Y'all were talking about me.

Zenobia: Sort of.  We're plotting to teach Esperanza to mind her own business.

Whitney: I should have known this was going to happen.  (To Tanner) I can handle her.

Tanner: You aren't handling her.  You're letting her get under your skin.

Finnick: Besides, yours ain't the only business she's been getting into.  Nakoma's about ready to smack her upside the head.   (To Zenobia) Get out of in front of the speaker.  Your dumb chair is behind the kettledrum.

Tanner: We figure if we make her think...

Whitney: She already thinks whatever it is.  And shame on you, dragging Zenobia into this with everything else going on.

Tanner: It was Zenobia's idea!

Zenobia:  Whitney, I could use a distraction.  Dad expects me to step into Mom's shoes because I'm the oldest and he's driving me bonkers.  Won't let me do the very things he asks me to!

Whitney: You know how girls talk.  It's nothing.

Zenobia: Please.  I have been slut-shamed by the best, and she's doing whatever the opposite of slut-shaming is.  She's probably not doing it on purpose, but she's undermining your self-esteem, and none of your friends are going to let that happen.

Whitney: So who else is in on this?

******

At Witch's Cove

Nakoma: Welcome to the new and improved Overlook Event Venue!  Besides the glass doors we just came in through, all these striped places will be windows, so lots of daylight can get in.  Remember how gloomy it used to be in here?

Pocahontas: Gloomy seems to fit the witch theme better.

Nakoma: Now you're just being contrary.  Our cove was settled by nice witches and I'll fight anyone who says different.  The pink is, of course, for Mom.  Weird that Cash had a thing for women who like pink, isn't it?

Pocahontas: Don't ruin my day by mentioning Deadbeat Dad.   (She looks around and nods) It is a very Mom color.  So far, I approve.  Let's see the rest.

Pocahontas: What's with this goofy window?

Nakoma: Joe said this is a load-bearing wall.  He took out as much as he could without the place falling in on our heads.  This window's just a decorative feature, really.  Wall looks boring otherwise.

Nakoma: And across the dance floor is another sitting area.  The dance floor can also serve as the central hall for things like weddings, and the furniture will be mostly seating and small tables.

Pocahontas: Where will people eat?  Events generally have meals, you know.

Nakoma: I made Albus clear the storage downstairs.  If you want to dance while everyone is still eating, you hop in the elevator and voila!

Pocahontas: You mean to tell me the basement is a dining hall now?  I know Joe's good, but...

Nakoma: Actually, that part was mostly Jessie.  She looked around and said "Challenge Accepted".

Pocahontas:  I don't know why I'm surprised.  But I am.  Pleasantly.

Nakoma: So, can we start planning a gala event to reopen the Overlook?
