Nepotism or Networking?

After the very long road time, Candy parks at Windu Acres and strolls into the house.

Candy: Anybody home?!  We're gonna raid the fridge!

Rose-Grace (from the kitchen): You'll do nothing of the kind!  I've sent Tanner to pick up a couple of giant pizzas.

Maisie:  Nice place.  Oh, look, babies!  (plops onto the floor with Orlando and Samara)

Rose-Grace:  Group hug!  That way neither of you can say I'm playing favorites!

Candy: You've seen me more recently than Dionne and Maisie.  They get dibs.

Dionne:  Maisie doesn't do hugs.  Besides, she's found those babies.  We're gonna drag her out kicking and screaming when it's time to go.

Rose-Grace: I swear, Candy, every time you come back from an assignment, you look different.

Candy: Well, you know us creative types,  We gotta keep you normies guessing.  (to Dionne)  I was going through a fitness and tanning phase last time I was in town.

Dionne: All the family sends their love, Aunt Rose-Grace.  Where are Taylor and Nikki? Hell, where are any of the kids?  Besides the babies there, I can see them.

Rose-Grace: My dad and Nikki are picking Taylor up.  She's interning with a local seamstress shop.  The boys are off with their respective girlfriends.  Pike's parents took Stacie and Fred for the night, trying not to overwhelm you.  They'll be here tomorrow.

Taylor and Nikki run in and hug Dionne.

Rose-Grace:  Dad! You told them! I wanted to see their faces when they saw her!

Mace:  Rosie, you know I can't keep secrets.

Candy (laughing):  What am I, chopped liver?

Mace: I'm Grandpa Mace.  You may have heard of me.  You're Maisie.

Maisie: I have indeed heard of Grandpa Mace.  Nice to finally meet you.

Mace: Can I have one of my grandbabies now?

Maisie: Oh, I don't know about that.  I'm pretty baby-crazy and I don't share well.

Nikki:  I can't believe you've come to live in Barbieville!  I'm so excited!  Is anyone else coming?

Dionne:  Right now, it's just me and Maisie.  Your mom's finally found a place for my group home.

Taylor: Cool.  Where's it at?  Or is that top secret mayor stuff?

Candy: Zenobia and Boudicca donated the manor.

Taylor: You mean Zenobia did.  Boo don't come out of her textbooks any more than Maisie does - I bet they'll be study buddies! You are transferring here, right, Maisie?

*******

Monday morning, bright and early, at the mayor's office.  They settle at a conference table after introductions are made.

Zenobia:  I'll send you PDFs of the floor plans.  We are keeping a few acres, which are a tad removed from the manor itself.  No problem there that a fence won't solve.

Dionne (looking at the tablet):  This is fantastic.  How many bedrooms?

Boudicca: Ten, officially.  But there's also two home offices that could be converted.   Each of them with a private bath.  Any of those first-floor rooms could be your office, but I suggest the one marked Library.  It's centrally located.

Rose-Grace:  This red line?  Is that the fence you mentioned?

Boudicca:  Yes.  The guesthouse has more than enough room for the four of us to live there, but we were not about to give up the pool.  We'll admit to being that spoiled.

Dionne:  You could probably donate some of this land to the county parks.  A group home won't need that much acreage.

Zenobia: Not a bad idea.  It does abut the nature preserve.

Taylor Tells The Family

After receiving an alarming call, Rose-Grace combines errands with tracking down her husband.

Rose-Grace:  There you are!  Daisy told me you were in HBAD!

Pike:  I was, last she knew.  What's going on?

Fred: Step Mommy's real upset.  Tell her it's okay, Daddy.

Rose-Grace: I just got a call from the Medical Social Worker.  It seems Stacie's convinced herself Taylor is dying.  I know we told Taylor it could wait until she was ready to tell the family, but...

Pike:  Stacie never really got over your mom's death.  (Significant glance toward Fred)  And this might be too complex for some members of the family.

Fred: I told Stacie it was big people stuff.  She don't never listen to me.

*****
That evening....

Taylor:  What the hell?!  Does she think we're a bunch of liars?!

Pike: We kind of set a precedent for what she thinks is going on, given how we failed to properly explain Grammy's illness.

Taylor: Well, I'm not happy, but I guess we don't have a lot of choice at this point.  Can't have Stacie accidentally starting rumors.

Rose-Grace:  I'll spread the word.  Family meeting tonight, after the little ones go to bed.  Might as well tell everyone at once.  And I'm sorry we have to rush this on you.

Taylor: Apology accepted.  I almost have my head wrapped around it, anyway, so...

Taylor: I... When my appendix burst, the surgeons found out that I don't have internal female guts.  Where my ovaries should be, I have testicles. It's called Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome.  (Looks directly at Stacie)  I can't have babies, that's all it really means.  I am not dying.

Lee:  Wait, what?

McG:  I'll explain when we get home, dear.  No need to prolong Taylor's discomfort.

Finnick: Isn't that really rare?

Taylor: Yes, it is.  And I'd appreciate it if y'all are careful who you talk to about this.  I'm not ashamed or anything, but it's a private matter.  I really don't want it getting all over town.

Morgan: People can be very cruel, even if they mean well.   I don't blame you for wanting to keep this quiet... especially in high school!

Mace: That doesn't make any sense... I changed your diapers, you're a girl.

Tanner: The only boy parts she has are inside, Grandpa.  It's not like the other kinds of Intersex, where the problem's obvious.

Nikki: Is that in my sex ed book?  Or do we not cover that til a higher grade?

Stacie:  You're not dying?!  Really and truly?! (Runs across the room and hugs Taylor.)

Taylor's Condition

Note to readers: Sex talk ahead!  Flee now if you must!

Taylor and her parents meet with her doctors to discuss the recent discovery that she is Intersex.

Marcus:  One thing I need to say before we start: The medical establishment does not assign genders at birth. We diagnose a sex, a biological state.  Society assigns gender based on that diagnosis.  What we're talking about here today is sex - not gender.

Pike: Understood.

Marcus: There are four biological definitions of male or female, and in most people those aspects are all in agreement.

Lara: Taylor has displayed a remarkable knowledge of the subject, but I'll review them for the parents' sake.

Taylor:  I did a presentation last year on it for Mrs. Guinness's class.  One of my classmates kept running his mouth about "there's only two" and I just wanted to shut him up.  Didn't work.

Lara: When a child is born, we diagnose sex by the appearance of the genitalia.  In animals without a clear external structure,  the sex is determined by gonads - males make sperm, females make eggs.  Then there's DNA and hormone levels.

Rose-Grace: That's why you called it Complete AIS, because there was no "wait a minute, what sex is this kid".  Incomplete, she would have looked unusual?

Pike: What does all this mean for Taylor's future?

Lara: Yes, in the case of Incomplete Androgen Insensitivity, the genitalia would be ambiguous.  (to Pike's question) Beyond the question of motherhood, I don't think this will change anything about her life's trajectory.   She has no ovaries or womb, and therefore can't get pregnant.   But Taylor is quite healthy otherwise.

Marcus:  Two of the factors indicate male, two indicate female.  But that's just the biology.  (To Taylor) You seem to be taking all of this very well, but I do recommend you see one of our counselors.  It's quite a bit to cope with.

Taylor: I'm actually kind of relieved, to be honest.  I'd half convinced myself I had something horrible wrong with me.  Something that would kill me. But yeah, if you want me to see a shrink, I will.

So It Begins

Halfsies Sewing and Alterations, late afternoon.

Iris:  Taylor, what do you think?  Should we have a display of accessories for sale?  Or just focus on the clothing itself?

Taylor: It's not a bad idea.  Make a little extra money with inexpensive things, but not have a full-on jewelry depart -- ow!

Iris: What is it? Are you okay?

Taylor: Yeah, just a little twinge here, in my side.  Comes and goes.

Dawn: Cramps?  Is it that time of the month?

Taylor: I wish.  Mom says I'm a late bloomer.  If I've not started by my sixteenth birthday, I'm going to the doctor.  (rubs the spot)  This doesn't feel like a muscle cramp, anyway.

Dawn:  Remember the days when we wished for that, Iris?

Iris: I didn't start til eighth grade and thought there was something seriously wrong with me.

Taylor (laughs):  I've kept Mom busy with all the old wives' tales I've fallen for. Anyway... I'll get back to organizing the fabric in the work area.

Dawn: Customers.  Did we have anyone picking up an order today?

Iris: No.  I hope it's not that Jackson woman again.  She drives me nuts.

Tierra (confused): We were told this is a boutique?

Seven: I told you it wasn't.  (To Dawn and Iris) The airport lost our luggage.  We just need a couple changes of clothes, to get us through til the luggage is found.

Iris: Well, we do have a few pieces that our clients rejected.  They're quality work.  (uses intercom to ask Taylor to bring in the rejects)  Come to think of it, Dawn, we could display the rejects along with accessories.

Iris: Might want to call them something besides rejects if we do that.

Tierra: We met on the plane.  We're both here for Mrs. Moneybags.  I always made fun of the women on those shows, and look at me now.

Iris: It's not typical, from what I hear.  More old fashioned helpmeet stuff, less champagne and caviar.  He's redoing The Point, and from what I've seen of that place, it's not going to be easy.

Seven:  That's what got my attention.  Part of the application packet focused on interior design and landscaping.  Are either of you ladies participating?

Iris: I'm happily married.

Dawn: I've met Rayshawn.  He's not my type. Besides, it'd be hard to run this place and The Point.

Seven: Oh, you have?  What's he like?  What about his children?

Iris: I'm going to go see what's keeping Taylor.

Iris finds Taylor on the floor, gripping her belly and whimpering.

Iris (shouting):  Call an ambulance!  Call Taylor's parents!  Something's wrong with her!

The Verdict Is In

WDLC News special report. Live from Doll County Courthouse, Barbieville Mayor Rose-Grace Pike is making a prepared statement regarding Barbieville's Deadly Driver case.

Rose-Grace: Just moments ago, Paris Malfoy, once a respected professor at the local university, was found guilty of all charges.  Homicide victims included his own wife, historian Helena Malfoy, and County Parks Employee Charlie Lake.  Other charges include human trafficking, fraud, and grand theft auto.  Malfoy will be serving at least twenty years, at which time he is eligible for parole. I will not be taking questions at this time.

Andre: Do not respond to any questions.  Walk directly to the vehicle.

Malfoy: You were supposed to get me off, you lousy little --

Lynch: Considering public sentiment, you're lucky to have avoided The Chair.

****

It's evening by the time Rose-Grace gets home.

Mace: We saw you on the news.  Looking pretty good.

Rose-Grace: Lynch brought him out and the entire mob forgot I existed.   (chuckles)  I'm not even sure how I ended up being the one to make a statement.  Usually it's one of the attorneys.  I'm just glad it's finally over and I can get back to normal.

Candy: I snuck out in disguise and came right here.  Pike said I can crash on the couch tonight, since your windows are far enough from the road to deter reporters.

Rose-Grace: According to the police radio, crowds are congregating at your building and The Tor.  You can see them in front of James and PJ's place, too, but so far no one's complained there.  They're like vultures.

Candy: Making all us ethical photojournalists look bad.

Taylor: Hey, Mom!  Did he get The Chair?

Rose-Grace: You know we don't even have a death penalty.  I came in here to tell you I spoke to Halfsies.  They don't have the funds for paid employees, but they said an internship is possible.

Taylor: Internship is a good start, I guess.  Okay if I stop there after school tomorrow to work out a schedule?

Rose-Grace: Just remember, your schoolwork comes first.  Keep the grades up.

Rose-Grace: You left your homework this late?  You know better than that.

Stacie: I've been working on this all day, Stepmom.  Life in ancient Rome was crazy!

Rose-Grace: Life in modern Barbieville is crazy, too.  I'm gonna pour me a glass of wine and soak in a bubble bath.  Which might be something they did in ancient Rome.  Although my wine isn't kept in lead urns.

Mattie Settles In

 Sulu's (the local greenhouse/nursery)

Mattie is puttering around, enjoying her first full day of work in her new family's business. The bell on the door chimes.

Mattie: I'll be right with you!

Mattie: What can I do for you?

Jessie: I'm Jessie Cooper, I work for Joe Montez.  I need to put in an order for a large landscaping job.

Mattie: Oh, Su- I mean, Dad - hasn't trained me on that yet.  I'll have to call him in from the property.

Jessie: He's on the way in.  I flagged him down from the parking lot.  You must be Mattie.  How are you settling in?

Mattie: I like it here.  They even gave me my own room, even though I would've been fine sharing.  And the work so far has been a lot easier than what I did before.  Waitressing.

Jessie: I know what you mean.  Joe's a contractor, so we do construction.  I go home exhausted every night, but I don't normally deal with the public.  My roomie waits tables and she - well, my former roomie, I should say.  She recently had to move back into the family home.

Mattie:  As long as they keep their hands to themselves, I never minded the public.  It's the going home exhausted part that got to me!

Sulu: Thanks for waiting, Jessie.  I was checking on the hives.

Jessie: I figured as much since you looked like a snowman out there. Mattie's a nice girl.

Sulu: We've been quite pleasantly surprised.  Adopting an older child is always a risk.

Jessie: Did you really adopt her without ever meeting her?

Sulu: Sort of.  We'd seen her records and met her over video chat.  Now, what's up with this huge landscaping job?  Since when does Joe do landscaping?

****
Speaking of Jessie's former roomie, Zenobia is resting after rehearsal with Sarcastic Fringehead.

Zenobia: He thinks I'm not going to press charges.  Said my primary duty is to family.

Whitney: Well, my dad's an ass, but I don't think I'd --

Zenobia: Your dad never ran over your mom with your stolen vehicle. (pauses to collect herself)  I'm sorry, Whitney, I know your dad's done some awful things, but...  never mind, it's not a contest.  I'm just venting and probably telling you stuff I shouldn't.

Tanner: Since our mom is the star witness?

Finnick: Probably not supposed to tell anyone anything.

Taylor (entering): Hey, Finnick, you wanna make a little extra money?

Tanner: Hey!  Don't come in here during rehearsal!

Taylor: It's been five minutes since you stopped.  I waited and y'all are hibernating in here.  (To Finnick) That girl Sulu and Lynch adopted is looking for a guitar teacher.  She said she's just getting started, but Sulu said she's been taking lessons for years, so I don't know what's up with that.

Finnick: Let me guess.  You were showing her around school and just happened to mention that I play.

Taylor: Something like that.  She's pretty nice.  Kinda quiet.

Whitney: Is she pretty?

Finnick: What the hell? Why would that matter?

Zenobia: Because Esperanza, that's why.  Whit worries way too much about what that idiot thinks.

Whitney: Be nice.

Zenobia: Oh, that was way nicer than what I was thinking.

Finnick: I'll talk to Sulu or Lynch about it, Taylor.  We should be able to arrange something.

A Lucky Break?

Note: COVID masks are invisible to readers.  The hospital allows up to two people to be in the ER waiting room if they're with an ER patient.

After Pike and Rose-Grace leave in a hurry, Mace gathers the kids.

Fred: Sumpin bad happened!  Maybe somebody got dead!

Mace: It's Candy.  That mad bastard who's running over people hit her, but she is alive.

Stacie:  Mom?  Why would anyone want to runover Mom?

Tanner: Me and Finnick need to go.  Mom said, since we're adults now, she was going to change the paperwork so Dad's not POA any more.

Whitney: We can't invade the ER.  That'd be bad even if there wasn't a pandemic on.

Taylor: Yeah, if you go, everyone's gonna want to.  And don't start with how you'd stop us.  You know damn well you wouldn't argue if we managed to get into the car before you got it started.

Finnick: She might not have done it yet, though.  You know how she procrastinates stuff like that.

Nakoma: She's a tough woman.  I bet she's gonna be fine.

Finnick: I just need to sit tight.

*****

At the hospital.

Pike: They've got medical students working the front desk?

Boudicca: I help out everywhere, at least until my actual residency starts.  (Goes over the file, updating information as needed.)  This says her maiden name was Barr?  Candy Barr?

Rose-Grace:  That's one of the reasons she kept Pike's name after they divorced.  Her parents were easily amused.

Boudicca: All right, then.  It does say that the twins are listed as POA, but I don't think we need to contact them until Dr. Eaton makes a determination on her condition.  I'll be around if you need anything and someone will update you ASAP.

Pike:  She'll be fine, honey.  She's survived worse.

Rose-Grace: Are you trying to convince me or yourself?

Pike:  I'm not sure.  This guy going after Candy makes me wonder if she was working the case.  But don't the cops have their own photographers?

Rose-Grace: She could have been working on a story about the case.  Probably with someone from the Journal or WDLC.   I can make some calls if you want.

Pike: Maybe later.  Right now, I just need my wife.  Not the mayor.

*****
When Gabriella and Claudia hear the news, they rush to their best friends' sides.

Taylor: When they got the call, Mom and Grandpa were giving Dad a hard time for being racially insensitive.  He told me the exact same thing he told the twins - you know, those white boys!  I thought it was great that he treated me equal to them, but no.  They gotta ride him for his word choice.

Gabriella: Well, it's tricky.  Maybe his word choice could be better, but his heart's definitely in the right place.  He's been such a great dad for you and Nikki.

Taylor: Candy's been awesome, too.  Oh, Gabriella, I hope she's okay!

Claudia: Not knowing what's going on is the worst.

Nikki: Is it weird to be this worried about her?  I mean, she's just my... what... stepdad's ex?

Claudia: I think of her kind of as your aunt or something.  Would it be weird to worry about Morgan?

Whitney: I was so mad at you about Esper, and now this.  You could lose your mother.

Tanner: Hey, Mom getting hurt has nothing to do with that.  You have every right to be mad at me. Even if you're wrong.

Nakoma: Because Esperanza is a meddling drama queen.  Sorry, Whit, I'm with the guys on this one.

*****
Finally, after an eternity....

Marcus:  Candy's stabilized, but still unconsious.  I've called in a specialist for one of her legs - her knee took the brunt of the impact and is pretty much shattered.  Her vitals look good, all things considered.

Rose-Grace: That's all?  This guy killed the others.

Marcus (chuckles):  The others didn't see him coming and jump onto his hood.  By the way, I let the federal agent take Candy's go-pro.  Might be some useful footage on it.

Saturday at Windu Acres

Tanner is intent on the movie they're watching, but Whitney keeps stealing glances at him.  The things Esperanza has been saying are preying at her, even though she trusts Tanner completely.  She steels herself and makes her move.

Tanner: Hey, what are you doing?  Nothing inside the clothes, remember?

Whitney: Well, I've been thinking about that.  We aren't in high school anymore, you know.  We both want to and we've been together so long.

Tanner:  Wait, what?  Who the hell have you been talking to?

Whitney:  Esperanza says...

He pushes her away, gently, but she can tell he's angry.

Tanner: What's she been saying to you, to make you act so weird?  Well, weird-for-you.

Whitney: Don't you ever get mad at me for making you wait?  I mean, you're a grown man and men...

Tanner: Don't you dare say men have needs.  (Heavy sigh)  Whitney, I love you.  I think you've got good reasons for waiting.  Don't let anyone, even me, pressure you into it.

Whitney: But most of my reasons are gone now.  We've graduated, you're working...

Tanner: Back up a bit.  What has Esperanza been saying about this?

*****

Taylor:  When you get to High School avoid taking his class.

Nikki: It's a required class and he's the only teacher for it.  I kinda have no choice.  Besides, all he did was say some mean stuff.  I can ignore that.

Taylor: It's different from a teacher, and I think he's grading my work unfairly.  I had almost word-for-word the same answers as Alex and she got a way higher grade.

Candy: Let me guess.  Severus Snape?

Taylor: You just stroll in like you own the place.

Candy: I gave birth to about half the residents, so I can do that.

Nikki: I wonder if he's a racist.

Candy: He just assumes kids of privilege are going to expect special treatment. When the boys had his class, it was a constant stream of "Your dad married the mayor, that doesn't make you special".  It got so stupid, Pike had me going to conferences with that guy even though I'm not the custodial parent.

Taylor: Oh, yeah, I remember that now.  Maybe he got bullied in school and now he takes it out on us.

Candy: As if that's an excuse.

*****

One look at his twin tells Finnick volumes.

Finnick: Kids, maybe you should wait to watch the movie...

Stacie: No way!  You promised!

Anakin: I've only got a couple of hours til I have to go home.

Tanner (grumbling):  It's okay.  Instead of little sister getting lost this time, I guess the big brothers can.  But you're coming with me, Fin.  I got some bitching to do.

Finnick lets Tanner tells the entire story.  Esperanza's accusations that he's not really with Mace, the constant comparisons to other couples (including Finnick and Nakoma), even comments about Wilma.

Finnick: Okay, first off, Wilma's beside the point.  You don't want what Wilma's father had because that was messed up.  When you're with Grandpa, you're at work.   Would she be saying that if you still worked at the Cove?

Tanner: Probably.  You and Nakoma would be helping me cheat on Whitney.

Finnick: So basically, Esperanza is convincing Whitney that unless y'all have sex, you're going to spilt. (chuckles) Isn't pressuring the girlfriend into sex the boyfriend's job?

Tanner: I told Whitney it didn't hurt Four and Tris any to wait for marriage.  We can do the same if she wants.  She's terrified of getting pregnant again when she still lives with her mom.

Finnick: Esperanza's got a problem.  Nakoma had to tell her off because she was always asking stuff like that about us.  Someone should teach her a lesson.

Tanner: You up for some patented Pike Twins Shenanigans?
