Scenes From A Lockdown

From the outside, Barbieville looks like a ghost town.  But there is lots of activity.

Fred: How long you gotta work from home?

Rose-Grace: I don't know.   The scientists are working hard to find a cure, though.  We just have to be patient and deal.

Fred: What if they don't never and we end up like on Nikki's show?

Rose-Grace: Well, we won't have to worry about zombies, at least.  (chuckles)  Barbieville actually has a plan for that.  About twenty years ago, people thought all the computers would stop working, so they made a plan.

Fred: Kin I help build the walls?

Speaking of Nikki's show...

Taylor: So, if I do decide to watch, I'm going to need to know who all these people are.

Nikki: You agreed to watch the first season and give it a fair chance.   Most of these characters aren't even in the first season.

Taylor: And you'll do the same for my show?

Nikki: That's the deal.

But they have to keep the volume down because Dad is sleeping.  Like most "essential employees", Pike is putting in long hours.

Others are getting aquainted with new friends over social media.

Iggy: We sure picked a great time to move to a new town, didn't we?

Rupert: At least you have a lot of siblings.  I just have one sister here and the cousins are still giving me the side-eye.

Iggy: What's their problem?

Rupert: They think I'm sucking up to them because they're rich.  When their parents died, the whole family fought over custody, but most of them were just after the money.  Becky put it in a trust fund til they're 21.

Iggy: Good thing for you we met on the plane, huh?

Rupert: You have no idea.

And let us not forget the volunteers at the food pantries.

Ryan: Setting up here so people can drive through was a great idea.  Pocahontas is a genius.

Albus: She is pretty bright, isn't she?

Draco: Seriously?  You two enjoy this?

Ryan: Well, I'd rather be on a beach in Hawaii drinking out of a coconut and looking at girls in bikinis, but that's not real likely any time soon.  Why are you here, if it makes you so miserable?

Albus: His mother is trying to teach him a similar lesson to the one you recently learned.  (Notices a car approaching.) Get on your gloves and masks.  You know the routine by now.

Openly Biased: Bullies and The Bullied

Zenobia: Welcome to Openly Biased.  Today we're continuing the series on bullying, focusing on why people bully and what can be done about it.  My first guest today are Ryan Guinness and Helena Malfoy, both former bullies! Kudos to them for the "former" part!

Zenobia: Let's hear Helena's story first.

Helena: When I was a teenager, there was a pair of sisters that I targeted.  I did everything within my power to make their lives worse.  It wasn't until adulthood that I realized how wrong I had been.

Zenobia: What did you have against them?

Helena: Honestly, I think it was a case of tearing others down to build myself up.  I had incredibly low self esteem.  I had the power to make them cry and I reveled in it.  And they were easy targets - poor, unfashionable, all of that.

Zenobia: What made you see the error of your ways?

Helena: As you know, I'm a historian.  In the course of my studies, I saw the harm done by mistreatment of the poor.   Also, in the course of simple maturation, I came to understand that the things I vilified those girls for were not their fault, that they didn't choose to be what they were.

Zenobia: Have you talked to them since?  How did that go?

Helena: One of them has forgiven me and moved past it.  The other, not so much.

Zenobia: Ryan, what's your story?

Ryan: If there was anyone around who wasn't obviously a white Christian heterosexual with a good job, or parents that worked, I hated them.  I got beat up at school, lost jobs, all kinds of stuff.  Slut-shaming, fat-shaming, you name it - I did it.

Zenobia: Often, in a case like this, the bully has learned these things from his parents.  But that doesn't apply to you.

Ryan: My sister blames her ex-boyfriend.  All I can tell you for sure is that when Dad figured out I was the one causing all the trouble, he hit the roof. Might as well have sent me off to military school.  Then Mom found out we have, like, one drop of black blood.  Seeing my sister treated the way she was, by a man she thought loved her...  That was the last straw.  I've been trying to make up for it ever since.

Zenobia: Next up, I have those who were bullied.  Three of them are peers of Ryan's and one is a former victim of Helena's.  That's not really on purpose, but Barbieville is a small town and I work with what I have.

Zenobia: Peeta Mellark, Frodo Dean, Batgirl Montez, and Whitney Darling.  We'll start with Peeta and work our way across.  How did being bullied affect you, and do you have any advice for viewers?

Peeta: It was more like attempted bullying in my case.  I am Jewish, so I learned early on to deal with people who didn't understand.  In second grade, I remember a big scandal over my refusal to eat the pork and beans in my lunch. (laughs) Then word got out that I'm gay and people tried to give me grief for that, but it didn't bother me.  Bothers my boyfriend a lot.  He was never, you know, different.

Zenobia: I tried to talk him into being here, but he declined.

Peeta:  Anyway, my advice to viewers is the same as I tell my boyfriend:  You aren't hurting anyone and these people have no power over you.  That second part isn't true when it comes to lawmakers and stuff, but it sure applies to that jackass who wrote gay slurs on your locker.

Frodo: Most of the bullying I've dealt with has been racial.  Mom's black and Dad's white, so I get it from both sides.  I just roll with it like my parents do. Getting mad is counterproductive, that just "proves them right".  Joking about stereotypes is a good way to show how dumb the whole thing is, though, so I do that a lot.

Zenobia: I've heard it said the blacks can't be racist. But you said you get it from both sides?

Frodo: If you're talking actual racism, the stuff that's embedded in society, blacks can't be.  But plenty of us are...  We tend to assume the worst.  Like, say I'm wearing the saggy pants and your mom tells me to pull them up.  She doesn't realize it, but she's being racist.  Now, I could get mad and scream at her, but odds are she just thought it looked stupid.

Zenobia: Because she doesn't understand that it's a big thing in black culture.

Frodo: Right.  The best thing to do is stay calm and give the lady the benefit of the doubt.  If she did mean to be racist, you screaming in her face is just gonna make her even more so.

Batgirl: I can vouch for that.  Not so much on the race thing, but in general.  If people think you are trash and you don't behave like trash, it creates a chance to communicate.  I'm one of the sisters Helena talked about and, yes, we were trailer trash.  Everyone in town knew it.  We both left town upon graduation and I grew some self-esteem.

Zenobia: You must have, if you chose to return and raise your kids in the town that treated you so badly.

Batgirl: I realized then that most of what Charlotte and I went through was our parents' fault.  Kids, especially junior high kids, like Helena was during the worst of it, can't understand that children don't choose to live like we did.  I married Joe and brought him back here, we both work hard to support our family, and the worst my girls have gotten is an occasional comment about going back to Mexico, which they just find funny because they're Navajo.

Zenobia: So you offer the same advice as Frodo and Peeta.  Roll with it, they mean nothing.

Batgirl: More or less.

Whitney: I had what I thought was some harmless fun and Wilma came along nine months later.  Those nine months were a living hell.  Mom was there for me, every step of the way, but when you're thirteen, your peers are the most important people in your life. When I see the news stories about kids committing suicide because they've been bullied, I totally get it.  I thought about doing it, myself.

Zenobia: But you got through it.

Whitney: I had Mom.  She stood by me, helped me make my choices, even divorced my dad for me.  Held me when I cried, hid the cutlery when I was really down, everything.  But most parents are kind of oblivious to stuff like this. Maybe they aren't even capable of understanding. (Crying)  I think we need to be giving advice to everyone instead of just the kids getting bullied.   If you see someone being bullied, anywhere, any time, step in.  Don't mind your own business, don't make excuses for the bully.  Step in.  You might save a life.

Zenobia: Everyone out there - don't be a bystander. If you have ideas, advice, anything constructive, tell us in the comment section. (Outro music plays over everyone gathering around Whitney.)

New Beginnings

In celebration of John's earning a GED and being allowed to re-open his day care center, his friends throw a party at The Overlook.

John: As soon as Sulu gets done with these pictures, you can go play.

Roxy: Yeah, and the more you wiggle, the longer it's gonna take.  Aren't you proud of Daddy?

Kelly: I'm way prouder of him than you are.

Kelly: Oh, come on!  We wanna play, not pose a million times!

John: There, all done.  (To Sulu) What is it with kids? They won't pose when you want them to, but as soon as you point the camera the other way...

Sulu: Who knows?  Kids are aliens.  Vivica, let me take Dixie before you get up.  She's almost as big as you are.

Ryan surprises the twins and their sweethearts by joining them.

Ryan: Whitney, you got a minute?

Whitney:  Only if you're apologizing for being obnoxious for the last three or four years.

Ryan: That's it exactly. You don't deserve any of the things I said to or about you and, well, I'm sorry.  I promise you, I am not the same guy I was when school let out.

Whitney: I heard you were trying to get past your stupidity.  I'll forgive you.

Sylvia: You made all this food yourself?

Midna: Oh, no.  I have three other cooks in my employ now.

Sulu: Midna's being modest.  She might have had help cooking, but the planning and setting up here?  That's all her.  And she did it for free.

Midna: Not quite.  I am charging for the food.

John: Look at them.  You'd think we never feed them.

Albus: Looks like you and Pocahontas, not so long ago.

John: Not so long ago?  Maybe from your point of view, old man.

Albus: Of course from my point of view.  Who else's would I use?

Stacie notices Gabriella, who brought Jenny to the party, sitting alone in the corner.

Stacie: Are you mad your parents made you bring Jenny?

Gabriella (chuckles): I volunteered to bring her.  Anything to get away from my stupid aunt.  Remember I told you I thought my cousin Max would be in your class?   They aren't coming to school here at all - she's shipping them off to some fancy boarding school.  I'm never going to get to see my cousins again at this rate.

Stacie: Max might be too young, but surely Mary is on some kind of social media.  Might be hard, since her dad is rich and famous, but I bet Taylor could find her.  She'll be home, um... I don't remember what day.  But soon.

Pocahontas interrupts the scattered conversations by calling for a toast.

Pocahontas:  We all know what John's been through to get where he is today.  A toast to new beginnings and a wish for good luck!

Everyone joins in (the young with soft drinks, of course).

She grabs John and kisses him.  He's not surprised - they planned this.

Sulu:  Wait, what?

Nakoma: Saw that coming a mile away.

Roxy: Hooray!  Look, Anakin, we did it!

Albus: New beginnings, indeed.

Anakin: Holy shit.

Crazy Days Of Summer

Summer is winding down in Barbieville.  After a day of Back-To-School Shopping, Batgirl and Gabriella visit with Charlotte in her sauna.

Batgirl: This is so relaxing.  I should have Joe build me one.

Charlotte: He may have had a hand in building this one.  His name is on the list of The Tor's contractors.

Batgirl: Why am I surprised you saw a list of the contractors?

Gabriella: When are Mary and Max coming?  School starts next week.

Charlotte: My children do not attend public schools.  They're enrolled at a very exclusive boarding school in Switzerland.

Gabriella (disappointed): Courtney and I were looking forward to going to school with Mary.

Charlotte: I don't know where you got that idea.

Batgirl: From Joe.  He's assumed you plan on bringing them to Barbieville.

Charlotte: Well, you know what they say about assumptions.  I have the ability to give them the best education possible and I'm doing just that.

Batgirl: I'd go mad without tripping over my girls every morning.  How can you stand to be apart from Mary and Max?

Charlotte: Except for the unfortunate habit of interrupting adult conversations, your children are well behaved.  I'm afraid that isn't true of mine - especially Mary.  I contacted their older brother, who they've spent the summer with, and Mary took his phone from him to berate me!

Gabriella thinks "I wouldn't behave either if you were my mom, you snob" but keeps quiet.

*****

Stacie and her friends hang out at her house, enjoying the last few days of summer.

Stacie: It almost feels like I have my own room again, but I don't understand why they even wanted to go.  I mean, those people let my dad adopt them!  They aren't Baptistes anymore!

Anakin: That's not fair, Stacie.  My mom let me move so far away and live with total strangers, but she still loves me.  Sometimes grownups do stuff like that and we just don't get it cause we're kids.

Roxy: Yeah, if my dad gets married someday, that doesn't mean I have to stop loving my mom.  You love both your mom and Rose-Grace, right?

Stacie: Mom didn't let Step-Mom adopt me.

Roxy: If she did, because she thought it was good for you, would you stop loving her?

Stacie: Well, no....  I guess you guys are right...

Anakin: There's three ways to be a Dad - legal, love, and DNA.  Pike took over as their legal dad and he loves them, so that's two out of three.  The Baptistes are still family because of DNA and love, so that's two out of three.  (shrugs) My dad only did the DNA bit.

******

Speaking of dads, Roxy's is finishing up his last day of work at Witch's Cove.

John: Everything's put away for the night.  I gotta say, I will not miss folding a million maps a day.

Ryan: Thanks, John.  Not just for the maps there, but for putting up with me all summer.  I know I said and did some pretty stupid things.

John: You've come a long way.  You should be proud of yourself.

Ryan: A lot of that was your patience, showing me the things people have in common instead of how they're different.  Remember that one day -- Oh, boss lady is here.

Pocahontas: Ryan, why don't you go on home?  John and I can finish up here.

Ryan: Don't gotta tell me twice!

John: It's all done.  Ryan and I were just getting ready to lock up.  But thanks for offering.

Pocahontas: I wanted a minute to talk to you, since you're not my employee as of the moment you clock out, so it isn't unethical for me to say what I need to say.

John: What is it?  Is everything okay?

Pocahontas: Everything is great.  John, I'm ready.  If you still want, we can be together again.

John: Like together-together?

Pocahontas:  Yes, John.  If you want that, hurry and clock out.  I'd hate to be sexually harassing my employee.

Summer Is Coming

No lazy Saturday for the teens of Barbieville.  Exams are next week, then summer begins in earnest.  Study groups invade seperate rooms of the Pike home.  Or just play groups, for the younger set.

Fred: Did you know you don't get booby milk unless you grow a baby in your belly?  Bobby's mommy told me that's why she can't feed Dixie except with a bottle.

Wilma: How come boys even gots boobies, then?

Fred: Tanner says when we grow in the belly, we can be a boy or a girl depending on what chrome-zones and horde-moans we get.  We all automatically get boobies just in case we're girls.

Finnick:  (To Nakoma) Tanner, the font of all knowledge.

Nakoma: I wish.  I'd ask him who the guy stalking Pocahontas is. Creeps me out.

Mariko: He's just sending flowers.  Besides, if it came to violence, my money's on her.  She did beat the crap out of John in high school when he got Albion Kelly pregnant.

Tanner: I've seen her physically remove some bruisers from the park, too.  She's a tough gal.

Whitney: I like to gossip as much as the next girl, but we're supposed to be studying.  I'm really worried about the monologue for English.  How am I supposed to get into the head of a Victorian character? A man, even?

Anakin: Mommy said she's out of rehab now, but she's got to find and keep a job for a long time before she can even think about.... Stacie, are you listening to me?

Stacie: Sorry.  These guys are just so cute.

Anakin: I can't believe your folks let Orlando play with dolls.  Mommy always said...

Stacie: Anakin, we're besties, right?  I can be totally honest with you?

Anakin: Sure.

Stacie: Your mother is an idiot.

Nikki: I like Moana and everything, but I'm glad she didn't come with you.  I missed having it just be us two hanging out.

Taylor (to Gabriella): Are we not here?

Claudia: She's probably off somewhere trying to figure out which of Jason's brothers is her father.  DNA test said, plain as day, a second-degree relationship.  I don't think Jason's very smart.

Gabriella: She's with Courtney.  Mom took them to the beach.

Taylor:  Yeah, Moana practically lives at the Montez house now.  She likes you two, but she and Courtney...  thick as thieves. And we aren't hanging out, we're trying not to flunk.  We'll have all summer to hang out.

At City Hall.

Rose-Grace:  What are you doing here on a Saturday?

Kyra: I'd ask you the same, but I bet I know.  Hiding from a house full of kids?

Rose-Grace: I've got some stuff with the zoning board to straighten out by Monday.  I want to give them a final decision first thing in the morning and get it over with.  (laughs) Also, a house full of kids that aren't mine.

Kyra: I wanted to ask you about borrowing The Tank at some point over the summer.  Brent wants us to meet his sister and we thought we'd make a vacation of it, but cost is an issue.  Filling up an RV and renting a campsite is a lot cheaper than plane tickets and a pair of hotel rooms.

Rose-Grace:  Sister?  Not the parents?

Kyra: Brent hopes we never meet his parents.  They're the worst sort of people you could imagine.

At Witch's Cove.

Pocahontas: I'm going to say this once, Ryan.  You are getting this chance as a favor to your parents and sisters.  I hope they're right when they tell me you've turned over a new leaf.

Ryan: Yes, ma'am.  Well, I'm trying.

Sylvia: My ex filled his head with so much crap from the time he was little...

Pocahontas: Your obnoxious ex aside, Ryan's not a child anymore and it's time he acted like it.

Pocahontas:  You'll work the ticket booth this summer.  Your sisters will work the first few days here with you, for training, and then you'll be assigned with others.

Phoebe: And we'll smack you upside the head if you get outta line.  (To Pocahontas) Once we get home, that is.  I know whacking your co-workers is frowned upon.

Day Of Rest? Where?

Sunday in Barbieville, the day after the fire at Witch's Cove.

Marcus: Hold your horses, Albus!  Even if your oxygen levels didn't need to monitored, I wouldn't let you go home until I know you're mobile on the crutches.

Albus (slightly breathless): I'm good, Doc.  Ask Pocahontas, she was down at PT with me.

Marcus: And she sees how short of breath you are.  You could pass out, fall down the stairs, and end up right back in here.

Albus: I don't have any stairs.

Pocahontas: Albus, unless you want to hobble across town on those crutches, you aren't going anywhere until Doc clears you.

Albus: I'm telling you, I'm fine.  And what about my garden?

Pocahontas: Anakin is taking care of the garden.  He's there even as we speak.

Albus: He is very good with the plants.  Told me his mother kept a garden.

Detective Spiro interrupts the Sunday yard work at the Guinness home.

Detective: I understand you've had long-standing issues with Tanner Pike, Ryan.

Ryan: He kicked my ass once, if that's what you mean.  You think I started that fire at the park? That's...  I'd actually try to kill people just because Tanner can't take a joke?

Guinness: The fire yesterday?  My wife, daughters, and I can account for Ryan's every moment in nearly a month.  He's been under house arrest.

Detective: You mean grounded?

Ryan: No, he means this place is practically a prison.  Even in the bathroom, I got one of them outside the door!

Guinness: Prisons have communal showers, do they not?

At the Pike house, most of the family is sleeping in.  It was a late night.

Nikki: You're playing with the dollhouse?  Where's the real Stacie?

Stacie: I was gonna give them to Anakin.  He really likes dolls and his mom never let him have any cause he's a boy.  But look how much Samara and Orlando like this stuff!

Rose-Grace comes in, carrying a freshly bathed Fred.

Fred: You gits to put my clothes on!

Nikki: Quiet.  Taylor's still sleeping.

Rose-Grace: I have to go to the office.  Finnick has gone to pick up Tanner at the hospital, Dad's still sleeping, and this one wants to be a nudist.

Nikki: You have to go to the office?  On Sunday?

The twins are met in the driveway by Frodo and Four.  They settle into the Boy Cave before talking.

Four: A broken wrist and smoke inhalation was the worst of it?  I've been freaking out since I heard and that's all it was?

Tanner: No, my legs are all bandaged up.  Doc says they're minor burns, but they sure as hell don't look or feel minor.  And Albus broke his ankle.

Finnick: He had a flashback, too.  Nakoma said from the Vietnam War. Had to call us into his hospital room and apologize for the things he said, as if we understood that language.  He could've been telling us the password to Area 51 for all we knew.

Tanner: Whitney came to see me last night.  We're a thing now.

Frodo:  What?! (catches himself) That's great.  I guess you were the dude Nakoma mentioned.

Tanner: I know you liked her, man.  Don't play like this isn't gonna bother you.

Frodo: My heart ain't broken.  Dented, maybe.  (Waves the issue away) I'm happy for you.

Tanner: Really?  You're okay?

Frodo: I will be.

Four distracts Finnick, letting the other two talk.

Four: You gonna let me sign that cast?

Finnick:  Why would I want "Four loves Tris" written all over my arm?

Rose-Grace is surprised to see John Smith walk in with Detective Spiro.

Detective: John caught our arsonist in the act, but he got away from him.

John: My place was on fire!  I wasn't about to let it burn down with my daughters inside!

Rose-Grace: He set fire to your house?  Not the day care?

John: My house is the day care - we have an apartment upstairs like Violet did. I went out to warm up the car before church and saw somebody in the back, the playground.  He took off running when I yelled, but he'd already started the fire.  I grabbed the hose. I didn't even think about chasing him.

Rose-Grace: As you should have.  Don't let anyone tell you different.

Detective: I'm having several suspects picked up for questioning.  Do you know of anyone who might want to harm the Smiths?

John: She thinks Pocahontas did this.  Like Pocahontas would set fire to her own place and damn near kill people just to throw cops off the scent.  Or burn down her best friend's diner.

Rose-Grace: There's no evidence these were all set by the same person, John.  Who is with your girls right now?

John: They're at the park with some friends and their parents.  We saw them on the way here and I figured that'd be better than dragging them to this meeting.

Rose-Grace: Unless Detective Spiro needs you for anything, you can go ahead and leave.  Give them hugs from me.

The rest of the weekend passes uneventfully.  Monday is a Teacher In-Service, so there is no school, but late Monday night (early Tuesday morning), Fred rushes upstairs.

Pike (groggy): What is it, son?

Freddy: Finnick said get you.  Tanner is crying and his leg ouchies look like volcanoes.
